1. What is all this about Cannabidiol (CBD), is it legal, safe?

Yes, CBD is now legal in the UK (usually as long as the THC content is under 0.2%). Since legalisation an exciting new industry has formed and a variety of products are emerging on the market like my new CBD bath bombs.

The Cannabis leaf is usually imported into the UK from Europe where manufacturers produce CBD Oil or CBD Isolate in approved labs, most labs require a government license to undertake this task. Alternatively, some UK suppliers import this from the USA with the same requirements. All labs issue content assurance certification. This gives you as buyers assurance of quality on product content.

My handmade CBD bath bombs are Cosmetic Product Safety Assessed (CPSA) and are made using a UK supplier with Lab certified CBD Isolate. I only use CBD Isolate which is the purest form of CBD and is in a powdered form with 99.9% CBD and minimal THC, this ensures the safe combination of products in each bath bomb.

Alongside this dedicated page, I’ve also designed a free Ultimate UK CBD Guide which can be fired into your inbox! Just tell me where you would like it sent below and you can print or share with friends or family.

A great article explaining this more and why people are turning to CBD can be found by following the links below to BBC articles.

2. What is Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)?

I’ve learned Cannabidiol, or CBD, is just one of the 113 identified cannabinoids naturally found in Cannabis Sativa L.  THC is one element and is the psychoactive part that will make you ‘high’. Through lab extraction this part is either significantly removed in the case of CBD Isolate, or partly to under 0.2% in CBD Oil to make it legal to sell in the UK.

CBD Oil or CBD Isolate will not make you ‘high’, however CBD Oil can sometimes show up on drug tests, which is why my CBD Isolate Bath Bombs may be a better option. CBD Oil can sometimes have an unpleasant taste, natural breakdown in the stomach can also reduce effectiveness.  Using a CBD  bath bomb in your bath enables absorption through the skin.

3. What does it do?

My CBD Bath Bomb products are used for cosmetic purposes and the combined ingredients soften your skin and body. There are growing claims that CBD can have other benefits such as anxiety relief, anti-seizure, Neuroprotective, pain relief, anti-acne and cancer treatment; researchers are also studying CBD for use of treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease and stroke. It will be very interesting to see the outcome of these studies as CBD continues to grow.

For me however, it is not sensible or legal to advertise any other benefits within the UK in relation to CBD Bath Bombs. Primarily because under UK law, any medicinal products would require a licence to sell, and our CBD Bath Bombs are cosmetic products. As with Essential Oils, we believe consumers educate themselves effectively and can make their own informed choices based on the research they have done online. This is no different to any product you buy these days, however, I found this article honest and open;

As a bath bomb, because the heat and water opens up your pores, any ingredients in the bath will usually absorb into your body and blood stream directly for the best results.

CBD Bath Bombs can only be purchased and used by people over 18 years of age as it is classed as an adult product, this does not mean it is not safe.

4. Is it safe?

As with any product you buy, it is your responsibility to check the ingredients and the allergens listed for safety. Most CBD products always recommend consulting your GP if you are unsure about any ingredient listed such as CBD. Your GP should be able to advise you if it may not be suitable for you, or if it is not advisable in conjunction with any conditions or medication you may have.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that “CBD is generally well tolerated with a good safety profile. Reported adverse effects may be as a result of drug-drug interactions between CBD and patients’ existing medications.”.

Laboratory testing

I’ve also discovered the wonderful world of lab testing! CBD products in most nations require a lab certificate to confirm the contents, labs that undertake this are also required to have a government licence. The lab results confirm the quantity of CBD Isolate at 99.9% within the products and any residual materials such for peace of mind and quality assurance.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) statement on CBD products

The MHRA has issued an opinion on the regulatory status of products containing CBD. An MHRA spokesperson said:

  • “We have come to the opinion that products containing cannabidiol (CBD) used for medical purposes are a medicine. Medicinal products must have a product licence (marketing authorisation) before they can be legally sold, supplied or advertised in the UK, unless exempt. Licensed medicinal products have to meet safety, quality and efficacy standards to protect public health.”
  • “If you use CBD and if you have any questions, speak to your GP or other healthcare professional.”
  • “We have written to UK CBD stockists and manufacturers to inform them of our view. We can provide regulatory guidance to any company who may wish to apply for a licence.”
